The American Community Survey, Do I have to?

Yes. Your participation in the 2010 Census is vital and required by law, (Section 221, of Title 13 of the U.S. Code). However, rather than rely on criminal charges, the Census Bureau is very successful in getting participation by explaining the importance of the questions we ask and how the information benefits our communities.

Making Sense of the Census

A New Portrait of America,
First 2010 Census Results

Rate of Population Change U.S. and States

The U.S. Census Bureau announced on December 21, 2010 that the 2010 Census showed the resident population of the United States on April 1, 2010, was 308,745,538.

The 2010 Census showed the population of the State of Montana was 989,415.

Real-time Participation in Your Area

A "Participation rate" is the percent of forms mailed back by households that received them. As forms are returned from the U.S. Postal Service as "undeliverable" we adjust the rate to exclude these often vacant households. We expect this to provide a truer picture of public participation in the Census, especially with the current economic climate and housing market.

As of November 2010, the national Census 2010 participation rate matched Census 2000 at 74%.  Montana's final rate is yet to be determined however, it is expected that Montana will meet or beat Census the 2000 participation rate.
