1990 Census Geography Glossary
1990 Census Tract/Block Numbering Areas (BNA) Outline Maps: county-based series depict census tract or BNA boundaries and numbers and the features underlying the boundaries. They also show governmental units in relation to the census tracts/BNA's. The number of sheets for the Tract/BNA maps vary per county from 1 to 5. These maps provide needed information for appraisers and financial institutions to meet government regulations.

NOTE: Census Tract Outline Maps - The Census Bureau recreated the 1990 Census Tract Outline Maps in June 2002 and has made them available on their web site at http://ftp2.census.gov/geo/maps/trt1990/st30_Montana/. It is important to note that these PDF maps are re-creations of the 1990 Census Tract/BNA outline maps and differ from the original 1990 Census Tract Outline Maps. Similar to the 2000 Census Tract outline maps, these maps are county-based and created for all 1990 Counties/County Equivalents in the United States. All maps utilize 1990 geography; however, display features are based on what was used for Census 2000. These maps show the boundaries and numbers of the 1990 census tracts/BNAs as well as the named features underlying the boundaries. They also show the boundaries, names and codes for 1990 American Indian/Alaska Native areas, counties, county subdivisions, and places. The scale of the maps will be optimized to keep the number of map sheets for each area to a minimum, but the scale and number of sheets will vary by the area size of the county and the complexity of the census tracts.
1990 County Block Maps: show census blocks and their numbers; boundaries for statistical and governmental entities such as census tracts and places; and physical features needed to locate the specific geographic areas for which the census provides data. The number of sheets for block maps vary per county from 4 (Wibaux) to 81 (Yellowstone). The County Block Maps are available on the Census Bureau's web site in PDF format. They are available at http://ftp2.census.gov/geo/maps/blk1990/st30_Montana/.
